Bolinder received a PhD from the University of Gothenburg in 1919 and professor at the University of Bogotá, Colombia, from 1935 to 1936. Together with his wife Ester Bolinder, he made several extensive research trips among south America's Native American tribes. These included the first from 1914 to 1916 in northern Colombia, in particular the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the second in 1920-21 the Goajira Peninsula and adjacent parts of Venezuela. He travelled on in West Africa from 1930 to 1931 and again in South America from 1935 to 1936, 1936 to 1937 and 1942. The objects collected during his travels were donated to the Gothenburg Ethnographic Museum and are today included in the collections at the National Museums of World Culture.
