A large original watercolour and wash composition, on cartridge paper measuring 19.5 by 13.5 inches., being a view of Devil’s Peak and the rear of Table Mountain, in the background from Rondebosch Common (?). In the left hand foreground is a building partly obscured by trees, while in the centre is an ox-wagon and local inhabitants walking along the road, with a fenced open area behind.
This painting shows some influence of the work of Thomas Bowler and indeed the artist could well have been a pupil of his prior to Bowler leaving the Cape in 1868. Those features of special interest are the composition in general with mountainous back-drop and people interest in foreground, and the treatment of the figures with the use of chinese white.
Inscribed in ink on verso “Mr Darley”. Accompanied by section of old overlay mount on which the title, artist and date are inscribed in pencil. In good condition.
