C. Graham Botha (1883-1973) was Chief Archivist of the Union from 1919-1946 and active in numerous cultural institutions, including Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Van Riebeeck Society at the time of publication. Witbooi, a Nama, realised that African unity was essential in the face of conquest and colonisation by Germany. He committed his thoughts and convictions to paper in the form of a journal, and kept minutes of meetings and copies of correspondence with other Namibian leaders and Imperial German officers.
