1899-1902: uitgegee op las van die Minister van Nasionale Opvoeding en onder toesig van die Departement Geskiedenis van die Universiteit van Pretoria.

6 volumes. (x, 508 pages; x, 513 pages; xi, 594 pages; xiii, 513 pages; ix, 587 pages; vii, 371 pages): illustrations, portraits (some as frontispieces, col. maps (some folding, 1 in pocket on rear endpaper of volume 1).

Cloth. Some slight scarring. Volume 6 was issued posthumously, and in a small print run, thirteen years after vol. 5. Cellotape marks on endpapers of volumes 1-3.

Contents: Volume 1. Die Boere-offensief, Okt.-Nov.1899. Volume 2. Die eerste Britse offensief, Nov.-Des. 1899. Volume 3. Die stryd in Natal, Jan.-Feb. 1900. Volume 4. Die Boereterugtog uit Kaapland. Volume 5. Die Britse mars tot op Pretoria. Volume 6. Die Beleg van Mafeking tot met die Slag van Bergendal.

The six volumes of this set cover the period from the beginning of the SA War to the Battle of Bergendal, after which the guerilla phase of the war started in earnest. It is to be regretted that due to Breytenbach's death and financial constraints, this historical work will never be concluded. The detailed research and equally detailed maps that accompany the text make this publication a cornerstone of any collection dealing with this war.
