Two volume set. Original brown cloth boards with gilt titling on the spines and a decorative device on the upper boards. Black end papers. Volume one has xx prelims and 435 pages. Volume two has xii prelims and 397 pages. 5 of the 6 maps are coloured and are on two large fold outs, one fold out sheet is at the rear of each volume. The black and white map is the frontis of volume two. 179 black and white illustrations, some in text, some full page, drawn from many sources, some photographic, others after drawings. CONDITION DETAILS: The bindings have a few marks and some edge wear. The bindings are firm and tight, a few corners are worn and minor (2cm) hinge cracking. Internally clean, with few minor soil marks. The fold out maps at the rear of each volume have been reinforced (see image) with cloth - this probably saved them from the usual tears at the hinges. The maps are clean, but the one has a little dust at the top margin.
