How it works

Green cloth-covered boards embossed with blind design, gilt lettering on spine. Spine colour and lettering browned and faded. The book has been neatly re-cased in its own original covers. Binding in very good condition.

According to the literary historian, Walter smith, the first printing of the first edition had 39 errors. Some errors were corrected during the printing process. This book has the following original errors:

  • In the vignette on the title page, Captain Cuttle's hook is on the left (wrong) hand.
  • On page 284 'Delight' is used instead of 'Joy'.
  • On page 582 there is no full stop in the last line.

The word Captain is correctly spelt in the last line of page 324 (not Capatin) so this book is not a first printing, though it is an early printing of the first edition.

Other features include:

  • an 8-line errata leaf at the end of the book
  • Smith also describes a 'variant' binding with 'cover embossed with a blind design' and 'gilt title and London and the date at the tail of the spine'.
  • On page 547 the plate entitled On the Dark Road is the first published example of the mechanical printing process called 'dark plate'.
  • Size: 229 x 149 x 51 mm
