Zakkie Eloff was born in Botswana and received his education at Pretoria Boys High School where his art teacher was Walter Battiss. After school he received further art instruction in Johannesburg from Maurice van Escche. After qualifying and working as an art teacher, Eloff became a game ranger at the Etosha National Park in Namibia. He later became a full-time artist and is regarded as one of the most important portrayers of wild life.
