Presentation inscription from Olive Schreiner to Hermann Kallenbach on the front free endpaper. Also annotations in the author’s hand on pages 48, 74 & 160.

The inscription reads, ‘H Kallenbach, from his friend Olive Schreiner, with many thanks for all his kindness, London, June 1915.’

Hermann Kallenbach (1871 – 1945), a German born Jewish architect settled in South African in 1896 where practiced and became a South African citizen. He met Mahatma Gandhi in 1904 becoming his intimate friend and dedicated devotee. He was the owner of Tolstoy Farm (named after Leo Tolstoy whom he admired) situated south west of Johannesburg which he donated to Gandhi and which played an important part in the Satyagraha or non-violent resistance struggle. Kallenbach corresponded with Olive Schreiner and as a believer in vegetarianism gave her advice with her diet as well as assisting her in other ways.
