Demy 8vo; new blue cloth, with gilt lettering to spine; new endpapers; pp. xv + (i) + 399, incl. index; plates; large, folding map at rear. Discreet book label of earlier owner (Col. R. F. Collinson-Cooper of Arusha, Tanganyika Territory) to original front free endpaper, and his hand-stamp on fore- and top edges; moderate foxing; short tear to folding map, well clear of image area, repaired with archival tape. Please note: This volume lacks the plate (\'On the summit of Mount Elgon\') that should face page 230. Good condition, in a new binding. (Czech, p. 82; Hess & Coger 294) \"An administrator in British East Africa, Jackson recounts his early days hunting around Lake Lamu in the 1880s. Besides hippo, waterbuck, hartebeest, eland, and oryx, he bagged buffalo near the Mau Escarpment, and buffalo, elephant, and lion near Mt. Elgon. He also relates a failed attempt at the elusive bongo. The author met quite a few well-known hunters of the era, including Count Teleki, Sir John Willoughby, Buffalo Jones, William Rainsford, and others. Of interest are his comments regarding Teddy Roosevelt, whom Jackson liked but decried his over-expenditure of ammunition on game. There is also a chapter on professional hunters in general.\" - Czech, An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, p. 82. Sir Frederick Jackson is also well-known as the author of \'The Birds of Kenya Colony and the Uganda Protectorate\', in the introduction to which his wife, Aline Jackson, shares something of his character: \"More than once opportunities of higher appointments were offered, but no other country made the same appeal. In his own words he loved Africa for itself - its vastness and its free life, its big game and its bird life. He loved the call of the wild; the weird vociferous scream of the Fish Eagle and the deep booming of the quaint Ground Hornbill; the Augur Buzzard, and the crimson-winged Plantain-eater.\"
