Eben Dönges was the second elected State President of the Republic of South Africa. He would have replaced President C. R. Swart at the end of his term on 1 June 1967, but died before he could take office. The large R1 (One Rand) coins from the period were minted with his profile.
The author Dr. Anton Ettienne Bekker received his Doctor's degree in 1987 for his biographical study on the life of Dr. T. E. Dönges. In 1988 his study was published in a limited edition of which this copy is number 82.
