Petherick was a Welsh mining engineer who travelled extensively
in Central Africa. He traversed through the Bahr-el-Ghazal region,
then almost unknown, exploring the Jur, Yalo and other affluents of the
Ghazel and in 1858 he penetrated the Niam-Niam country. His addition
to the known knowledge of natural history was considerable, being
responsible for the discovery of new species. He describes visiting
ancient Egyptian sites, reports on local traditions, dress and sports,
as well as several hunting trips.
