xii + 402 + 24 pages of publisher’s catalogue, large folding Map of the Transvaal and the Surrounding Territories by F.J. Pretoria (1879) as frontispiece Jeppe - repaired at the folds with tape, original green pictorial cloth gilt over bevelled boards - bright but slightly worn at the top of the spine, original brown endpapers intact and with a signature of a previous owner on the front free endpaper, uncut edges foxed, some light foxing throughout the contents, a good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 267, ‘A rather interesting account of a tour throughout South Africa from March to October 1878. The author, who was in search of health, started from Pietermaritzburg, and enjoyed some good shooting en route; amongst other places visited were Spitzkop and Lydenburg, and there is an excellent description of the goldfields at this period, together with notes on the Boers and the natives. Some particulars are afforded respecting the campaign with Sekhukhune, and there is a reproduction of a Royal Proclamation calling for volunteers, which shows the extraordinary methods adopted by the Government in order to induce the inhabitants to enlist.’
