"When this book was first published in 1933 it was at once acclaimed as the most important study on this subject to date. In the whole history of South Africa there has been no greater aesthetic achievement than the Cape architecture of the 18th century, and it was Professor G.E. Pearse who was the first to consider it as an independent style and to examine it in its historical perspective. His monograph has become a standard work and its reputation stands even higher, if possible, to-day than it did twenty four years ago... With the exception of the title page, the present edition is an exact replica of the first one. As in the 1933 edition, photographs and measured drawings are reproduced by collotype, since no other printing process permits the reproduction of minute details with the same degree of exactness." (front flap note)

49 pages text followed by 113 plates, and index.
