Original 1872 edition, 418pp. and with fold-out map inserted after contents pages. Brown boards in good condition (corners bumped, rubbed), inscriptions on f.p.e-p., end-papers foxed, stitch-binding showing at certain gatherings (but not cracked), map is torn along half the pasted edge, and has been re-backed with light, tissue-like paper; text and page edges very good, though age-toned.

The author gives interesting observations on everything from the wildlife of Southern Africa, to interaction with the natives, and includes poems in honour of kings such as 'Tjaka', 'Dingan' and Mzilikazi; also included are illustrations of wildlife, hunting incidents, and the 'Coronation of King Ulopengule'.
