One of the earliest works dealing with Matabeleland and gives one of the best
accounts of the country and its natives nearly a quarter of a century before its
occupation by the British (Mendelssohn II, 492-493).
A missionary in Matabeleland, Thomas not only worked at converting
the natives, but hunted ivory to supplement his meager church
stipend. While traveling to the Zambezi, he relates incidents of
hunting elephant and buffalo. Probably the first white man to reach
the river from the south, Thomas also enjoyed sport after hippopotamus,
lion, and rhinoceros (Czech, An Annotated Bibliography of African Big
Game Hunting Books, p.164).
