Publisher's pictorial brown cloth binding with gilt titles on the front panel and spine.

xxiv + 490pp. All full-page illustrations are present, as well as the map and large fold-out facsimile on page 480 of the Mahdi's letter to Emin Pasha in Arabic demanding his surrender.

Internally the book is clean with a contemporary owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Short cloth tear at the front hinge of the spine crown.

The author was part of Stanley's expedition to Southern Soudan where they planned to rescue the German-born governor of Equatoria Eduard Schnitzer, known as Emin Pasha who, in 1885, had been caught up in the Mahdist uprising.
