KARATARA is a tiny settlement on the edge of the Knysna Forest. Originally established to accommodate forestry workers, the population has dwindled as the industry has faded. Those who remain seem somehow lost in time, part of a forgotten era.
The late South African photographer, Pierre Crocquet spent a lot of time in Karatara from 2004 to 2006. Residents were initially wary and suspicious, and it took a while before they agreed to be photographed. His portraits from that time are compassionate, empathetic and compelling. Pierre Crocquet died in 2013 at the age of 42. This copy is signed by Pierre on the title page, signed copies are now scarce.
The Karatara portraits were exhibited in the US, Europe and locally at the Pretoria Art Museum and at the Sasol Gallery at Stellenbosch University. Hardcover in As New condition, 120 pages with 50 full page illustrations in duotone Foreword by Rick Wester, Texts by Eugen Blume.
