Alexander travelled & explored much of the African north-west coast & islands. From there he went on to the Cape, where he served under Sir Benjamin D'Urban in the frontier war of 1834-1835. This is one of the best & most detailed descriptions of any of the Cape frontier conflicts. The second volume contains three colour plates showing Bushman art found in shelters in the southern Cape. I believe these are the first colour copies of Bushman paintings to appear in print. This edition published some three years after the first edition, was revised by the author. Two volumes. Half tan calf matching cloth sides, morocco labels within raised bands on spines, marbled end-papers. Pp. xxii,(i),428 + xi,(i),352, 3 tinted lithographs (of Bushman paintings), uncoloured plates, portrait, illustrations, maps. MENDELSSOHN, 1/20; SABIB, 1/49. A most attractive set in a fairly modern half-leather binding, book-plates of Maurice Green & Ivor Colin Fox on blank leaves near the front of both volumes, some quite heavy foxing, the colour rock art plates heavily toned.
