Executive Outcomes was a controversial, but successful, private army which utilised ex-South African special forces operatives in the late 1990s. Barlow had served in the SADF in the engineers and reconnaissance units. His model was later used by Private Military Companies operating in Iraq and Afghanistan. Barlow's teams operated in Angola and Sierra Leone, acting on behalf of governments who had been implacably opposed to apartheid South Africa. They also protected diamond mines and oil interests in Africa.
