First edition. With illustrations from drawings by the author, by H. R. Millais, and from photographs. Royal 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. x + (ii) + 254, incl. index; map; fifty plates. Corners of upper board slightly bumped; light wear to extremities; moderate foxing. (Czech, p. 115) "Millais, well known as a naturalist, illustrator, and big-game hunter, traveled to the Dinka territory in the Sudan. In the Sudd region, his party hunted reedbuck and kob but was unsuccessful in finding elephant. Continuing along the Nile valley, they bagged buffalo, hartebeest, and trophy roan. Perhaps his best chapter describes hunting buffalo and eland in the Bahr-el-Ghazal region. The illustrations, for the most part, are taken from Millais' excellent sketches." - Kenneth P. Czech: A Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950
