With illustrations from drawings by the author, by H.R. Millais, and from photographs.

254 pages, frontispiece – giraffes moving off, 49 plates, map, red cloth gilt, light foxing in the text and slight spotting on the edges, covers starting to fray around the edges, corners bumped, a good copy.

John Guille "Johnny" Millais 24 March 1865 – 24 March 1931 was a British artist, naturalist, gardener and travel writer who specialised in wildlife and flower portraiture. He travelled extensively around the world in the late Victorian period detailing wildlife often for the first time. He is noted for illustrations that are of a particularly exact nature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Guille_Millais

Czech (Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 -1999, page 197: 'Millais, well known as a naturalist, illustrator, and big-game hunter, travelled to the Dinka territory in the Sudan. In the Sudd region, his party hunted reedbuck and kob but was unsuccessful in finding elephant. Continuing along the Nile valley, they bagged buffalo, hartebeest, and trophy-roan. Perhaps his best chapter describes hunting buffalo and eland in the Bahr-el-Ghazal region. The illustrations, for the most part, are taken from Millais' excellent sketches'.
