Hilda Cowham was a leading woman artist and book illustrator of the first half of the 20th century. She had work published in numerous magazines, including "The Graphic" & "Punch." She was an outstanding children's book illustrator & friend of leading book artist Mabel Lucy Attwell.

"Fiddlesticks" was her first book and is one of her finest, with illustrated nursery rhymes in colour & black / white. Among the nursery rhymes included are Three blind mice, This little pig went to market and The fastidious lady, this latter one has overtones of racism (reminder of the political incorrectness of her friend, Attwell, who was infamous for her depiction of the Golliwog in her stories). The artwork is however quite delightful and she became quite famous and was widely imitated, for her character of the black stockinged girl. She spent more than a decade painting for Shelley Pottery Studios.
