A 4pp. autograph letter (on a single folded leaf), dated July 28th. 1900, signed by F.C. Selous to "Noble", apparently also an ornithologist, concerning his visit to Norway in pursuit of birds, bird’s eggs and nests. He mentions many species by name including Flamingos, Long Tailed Ducks, Rufous Warblers, Black Bellied Sandgrouse, Herons and many others. See the images for the full text. In very good condition.
Frederick Courteney Selous DSO (31 December 1851 – 4 January 1917) was a British explorer, officer, hunter, and conservationist, famous for his exploits in Southeast Africa. His real-life adventures inspired Sir H. Rider Haggard to create the fictional Allan Quartermain character. Selous was also a friend of Theodore Roosevelt and Cecil Rhodes. He was pre-eminent within a select group of big game hunters that included Abel Chapman and Arthur Henry Neumann. He was the older brother of the ornithologist Edmund Selous, and was evidently, from the content of this letter, a significant ornithologist himself.
