A very fine 2pp. autograph letter on a Prime Minister's letterhead, dated 15.7.41., addressed to "My dear Myers", thanking him for his letter of congratulations "on my most recent advancement in the Army. The honour came as a surprise and was therefore all the more precious." He also refers to a reprint from Nature which he had read with much interest. Then, referring to the War "Hitler has made many mistakes; I am not sure that the attack on Russia is not the worst of them all."
Written on the front and rear pages of a single folded leaf. Circa 120 words. Single fold and in very good plus condition.
The most recent advancement which Smuts refers to was his appointment as Field Marshall of the British Army on the 24th. May. I have not been able to identify the recipient Myers definitively - he might possibly have been the British Physician/Psychologist Charles Samuel Myers, CBE.
An important letter. See lot 191 for a signed photograph of Field Marshall Smuts in his military regalia.
