"Rudolf Slatin Pasha escaped from his eleven years captivity
under the rule of the Mahdist Emir Madibbo. He was a friend
of General Gordon and was induced to seek the surrender of
Gordon at Khartum, a request he steadfastly refused. As a
result he was shackled and treated with savage cruelty. When
Khartum finally fell the severed head of his friend Gordon was
brought into the camp and shown to him. Slatin Pasha's escape
was brought about with the help of Sir Reginald [then Major]
Windgate of the Egyptian Intelligence Department and a local
Sheikh of the Ababda tribe, in a perilous 1000 km and a
three-week journey across the desert, finally reaching Aswan in Egypt."
