All plates with flags have their descriptions corresponding with their individual numbers on the opposite page, for example the description for flag no. 40 on page 45 reads, "The Rustenburg Vierkleur" (1857). When on 9/3/1857 the first "Vierkleur" was to be raised in Rustenburg, there was no red cloth of any kind to be got there. So the first Vierkleur was made provisionally with brown cloth.
