From the foreword: 'Sir John came to South Africa in 1834 in order to study the sky of the southern hemisphere, and his work here was of the highest importance. However he and his remarkable wife, Margaret, were also fascinated by what they saw of the wonderful flora of the Western Cape. This Sir John set out to record through a series of camera lucida drawings, with results that were completed in watercolour in a beautiful and highly accurate way by his wife.'
