Flower Paintings of Katherine Saunders. Botanical & Biographical Notes & Explantions- Emeritus Prof.A.Bayer.

When the Directors of The Tongaat Group Limited decided on the publication of this book to commemorate the 60th year of the Group as a Public Company in South Africa, they did so in order to provide the opportunity for a broader sector of our shareholders and the public to enjoy one of the many treasures within the Tongaat Collection and archives. With this point in mind and in agreeing to present the flower paintings of Ketharine Saunders in published form, it was felt that a history should also be produced of the early times when Katharine and her husband James, made their home at Tongaat.

Instead of gathering and presenting a detailed string of facts in chronololoical sequence leading to the present day structure of the Tongaat Group which, in its jubilee Year 1978/9 has achieved new financial records, it was considered preferable to produce a book as a tribute to the pioneers of all races and creeds, who in one way or another helped to establish Tongaat and to build our country. At the same time this biography attempts to reflect as accurately as possible the life and times of Katharine and James Saunders, who must be credited as being the founders of Tongaat.

I believe it is also appropriate in this year to record on behalf of the Directors our abiding gratitude to the many people who have contributed to the history of our Group, and who, over the period that Tongaat became known as a sugar company operating on the coastal plain of Natal, gave years and even lifetimes of loyal service. It is hoped that this book will encourage future generations to go forward in the same spirit that has been so clearly demonstrated in the past.
