Comprising: 1. Portraits and Autographs by W.T. Stead. Review of Reviews. London. 1890. 160pp. 4to. 1st. Edition. A very interesting publication comprising reproductions of autograph letters from notable persons solicited by Stead in support of his new Review of Reviews periodical. Stead was a well known journalist, editor (previously the Pall Mall Gazette) and social reformer. He was a nominee for the Nobel Prize for Peace which was probably thwarted by his untimely death on the Titanic. Letters from Olive Schreiner and Rhodes amongst many others are illustrated. This would be the first time the public had witnessed Olive Schreiner's handwriting and autograph - about 7 years after the publication of The Story of an African Farm. This item has been reprinted but is very scarce in this original printing. In the original stiff cloth lined wraps which are rather stained and worn. There is a postcard portrait of Stead mounted as frontispiece. 2. Woman and Labour. Olive Schreiner. Unwin. London. 1911. 1st. Edition of this feminist classic. This is a very good plus clean, tight virtually unfoxed and unmarked copy in the original gilt decorated cloth. The lower front corner has been exposed to some damp causing a small patch of fading of the cloth in this area (see image). 3. Woman and War. By Olive Schreiner. Stokes. New York.1914. Extracted from 'Woman & Labour', this small 59pp. book is the only edition in this form and is fairly uncommon. Neat signature on ffep. ow. a fine unmarked clean copy in a nearly very good scarce dw. which has some fraying and fold tears but is about complete. A very early example of the dust jacket. 4. My Other Self. Ed. Yaffa Claire Drazin. Peter Lang. New York. 1992. The Letters of Olive Schreiner and Havelock Ellis. 583pp. Fine copy in the original glossy illustrated boards. No dw. as issued. The original publication price of this book was $79.95 as it was presumably a small printing. A wonderful book and essential for the Schreiner enthusiast.
