"Although largely neglected by contemporary scholarship, the poetry of Francis Carey Slater (1876-1958) deserves attention as a significant attempt to 'Africanise' South African English poetic idiom. ...in his poetry (he), employed an idiom that presents itself as being truly indigenous. Slater's significance is suggested by what Roy Campbell and Anthony Delius, his younger contemporaries, have said about his poetic influence. Both acknowledge that he played a 'pioneering' role in the creation of a truly indegenous English poetry.

Campbell maintains that Slater 'acclimatised English poetry to these shores as the forerunner and pioneer of us all". (English Africa. Vol. 19, No. 2 (Oct, 1992), pp. 1-13, Dirk Klopper, Rhodes University).
