Le Vaillant was a typical product of his age, moulded by its attitudes, guided by its beliefs and writing in accordance with current conventions. Accordingly in the narration of his travels he probably attached more importance to fashionable presentation than to factual accuracy. He wrote to entertain rather than to instruct. He was concerned with immediate applause, yet paradoxically he was apparently not vain enough to realize how lasting his books were destined to become, and that in the distant future many of his paragraphs would be discussed and examined in detail, in some cases virtually word for word, in the impartial light of twentieth-century science.
