The life of the Eastern Frontier in the 19th century was brought alive by the brush of Frederick I'Ons, who lived and worked as an artist near Grahamstown from 1834 to 1887.
His own life and times, and the spirit of the stormy place he chose to live in are here described with rare perceptiveness. Students of art and art history will welcome the catalogue of extant pictures, and the reproduction of the rare "Stockenstrom Cartoons" will amuse the curious.
But it is the closely knit arrangement of the written life and the reproduced pictures- portraits, landscapes, genre, drawings- that give the book its true stature.
