Beyers was an Anglo-Boer War General and Speaker in the Transvaal Parliament. When World War I broke out he proclaimed himself in open opposition of the Policy of Botha's Government. He resigned his post as Commandant General in a letter addressed to General Smuts, voicing his disapproval of the Government's intention to invade the then German South West Africa. A few weeks later he was one of the Boer Rebels and was overwhelmed by Government troops and wounded. He drowned in the Vaal River on 8th December 1914 trying to escape his pursuers.
