From early in life Louis Botha showed leadership attributes, both as a soldier and as a politician. As a politician he worked towards a united South Africa where Boer and Briton could live in peace. He was to say that the Afrikaner Rebellion of 1914 broke his heart. He died in 1919. Smuts wrote of him: He was South Africa's greatest son and among men my best friend.
