'In 1985 Professor Chabani Manganyi of the Institute of African Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, suggested a book on the art of Gerard Sekoto. Barbara Lindop undertook the task of tracing the paintings of Sekoto with the intention of publishing them, and also to raise sufficient funds in order to make this project feasible. The aim has been to re-introduce Sekoto's art to South Africa and to honour his contribution to the cultural history of the country.

Gerard Sekoto and Barbara Lindop have established a close friendship through regular correspondence. Commentary has been extracted from some of these letters and juxtaposed with the colour plates in order to give a greater insight into Sekoto's philosophy and his artistic expression.

The introductory autobiographical essay is from a letter, written by Gerard Sekoto to Barbara Lindop, in which he answers a variety of questions about his life.

The paintings reproduced in the book cover the artist's creative work span, from c1938 in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, through to the late work of the 1980s. His early paintings depict scenes of Sophiatown, District Six, Cape Town and Eastwood, Pretoria. He left South Africa for Europe where he has lived in voluntary exile.'
