First edition, first impression of this classic James Bond spy novel by Ian Fleming.

Publisher's black hardcover binding with embossed design of skull with gold coins in the eye sockets on front panel.

This is the very uncommon FIRST state binding which has an extra 3mm line of embossed detail on the top left side of the skull. This was removed in later bindings.

Ian Fleming dedicated this novel to William Plomer, the South African author who was the reader for Jonathan Cape in London at the time when Fleming sent his first manuscript, Casino Royale, to the publishing house for review. "The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling etc. . ." Plomer immediately knew he had a winner and recommended the work to Cape for publication. Casino Royale gave the world its first glimpse into the delightfully terrifying life of British spy James Bond, also known as agent 007 - the world's most famous secret agent.

Binding tight. Internally clean.
