A book on the Zimbabwe Ruins and early Zimbabwean civilizations: "Garlake re-examines and re-assesses the work of all the early excavations, by archaeologists such as D.Randall-McIver (1905), Gertrude Caton-Thompson (1929) who helped elicit information from the shambles left by early 'excavators' such as R.N.Hall,"[front flap, note]. Garlake presents a complete coverage of the site from its first appearance in sixteenth century Portuguese accounts, and then deals with its architecture, early explorations and excavations, trade, traditions and history. Russet boards with gilt titles, inner hinges cracked, text good with occasional foxing, page edges faded. The jacket can be described as 'good', but is rubbed and creased, with some small closed tears in places. A presentable copy; 224pp., with diagrams, photographs and illustrations. Guide To The Zimbabwe Ruins: softcover booklet (stapled) in very good condition; felt pen price on front cover, slight water-stain on lower page edges, not affecting text), 55pp, 3 fold-out maps (Sketch Map of the Ruins, The Elliptical Building or 'Temple', and The Acropolis), printed by Chronicle, Bulawayo, 19/10/51 for The Department of Public Relations on behalf of The Commission for the Preservation of Natural and Historical Monuments and Relics.
