A series of short stories and anecdotes about the wildlife of the southern Rhodesian Lowveld. The Gona re Zhou Warden's home was located at Buffalo Bend in the Nuanetsi River. Wright writes with passion about his charges, both big and small. Every chapter reveals more about Wright and his vast knowledge of nature in that area and his preparedness to protect it.
One example: local inhabitants reported to him that when a truck stopped at an isolated local store one day they 'smelt blood'. A few days later Wright came across bloodstains in the veld and his Shangaan tracker, having found a few strands of hair on the nearby thorn trees, told him a lion had been poached. Wright returned to the store and interviewed all those who frequented it. One person reported to him he had heard a woman in the truck referred to by her first name. Using just this information Wright called all the mines in the area and tracked down the person. He then sent his staff in 'undercover' and they interviewed the lady's gardener who confirmed that the family went to Nuanetsi three weeks previously. Swift arrest, admittance of the crime and prosecution followed!
Wright wrote the book after he returned to the area some years after he left and finds the animals hugely diminished and his infrastructure dilapidated. "Never go back to any place that you have given part of your life to..." (p. 13). Wonderful Africana.
