Set of ordinances from the years 1876-77 for Griqualand West, where South Africa's rich Diamond Fields were located, and over which control was hotly contested between the British Empire and the Orange Free State Republic. Ordinance No. 4 of 1877 has the signature of the then Acting Administrator, Jacob Dirk Barry, who later became Sir Mr. Justice Jacob Dirk Barry.

The newly discovered Diamond Fields of Griqualand West soon drew a motley community of unruly quarrelsome fortune seekers, and Barry's years of service were not peaceful ones. He frequently had to settle disputes over land ownership and diggers' claims, and he even had to suppress an uprising by the native Koranas and Batlapins. In view of his able administration and firm swift suppression of the revolt he received the honour of knighthood in 1878.

Fourteen ordinances for the year 1876 (Ordinance no.9 wanting, with a contemporary ink note on an otherwise blank leaf indicating same).

Eleven ordinances for the year 1877

Ordinances include:

1876 No.10: Ordinance to provide for the better Protection of Native Labourers, and to amend the Laws regulating the Rights and Duties of Masters and Servants in the Province of Griqualand West, and for other purposes.

1876 No.14: Ordinance to amend the Laws regulating the Qualifications of Jurors in the Province of Griqualand West.

1877 No.2: Ordinance to facilitate the Apprehension of certain Offenders escaping to this Province from any Place within the Limits of the Colonies of the Cape of Good Hope and Natal, or within the Territories or Dominions of the South African Republic and Orange Free State, and to amend the Laws relating to the Extradition of Criminals.

1877 No.3: Ordinance  to control Recruiting in this Province for the Service of Foreign States.

1877 No.4: Ordinance for the better Regulation of the Trade in Diamonds in Griqualand West (this ordinance is personally undersigned by the Acting Administrator of the Province Jacob Dirk Barry, and the Acting Clerk of the Legislative Council T. R. Merriman)

1877 No.7: Ordinance Constituting the Town of Kimberley Municipality
