'During the 1940's Mrs. Anneliese Scherz took a large number of photographs in Owambo. Subsequently she collected similar photographic material among the Bushmen, the Kavango groups, and the Himba. As a result of these photographs, Dr. Ernst R. Scherz decided to make further enquiries into the existence of photographs of hairstyles no longer seen. He and his wife bought valuable negatives from the estate of a former health inspector in Owambo, Mr. K. Schettler. Later they discovered that the Swakopmund Museum posessed more of Mr. Schettler's photographs. Permission for the reproduction of prints of these photographs, was obtained from Dr. A. Weber and thus the complete Schettler collection became available.'
