‘A trustworthy and complete edition of these writings has long been a desideratum among those interested in the history of religious thought. The editor dismisses from consideration the astrological, magical, and alchemical writings ascribed to Hermes, and deals with those only in which is taught a religion based on philosophy. He aims at settling the much-disputed question of the origin and date of these Hermetica; and he concluded that they are records of the teaching of men who lived in Egypt under the Roman Empire, and that most of them were written in the third century A.D.’ Editor’s note.
