Over twenty years ago, Captain Stonham, who was then the medical officer of the Middlesex Yeomanry, and Commander Benson Freeman, who was a very great authority on Yeomanry historical matters, commenced work on the history of the Middlesex Yeomanry, and after spending much time and money, they completed the historical record of the regiment from its inception in 1797 up till 1908. This was published in serial form in that year in the Uxbridge Gazette, and it was finally decided, for several reasons, not to publish it in any book form.
Colonel Stonham died in 1915, and the history lay dormant until the summer of 1927, when the Middlesex Yeomanry were in camp at Ludgershall, near to where Commander Benson Freeman lived; he expressed his willingness to try and complete it for publication, but a few months later he met with a very sad death in a motor accident, before he had had time to do any more work on the history.
Comander Benson Freeman had immense knowledge of the Yeomanry force, and the present Editor made rather heavy weather of a task that would probably have not had many difficulties for the previous author. The period 1797 to 1908 was corrected in some details, and the years from 1909 up to The Great War did not yield much of interest. While the regiment was away or on active service, other units were in occupation of the headquarters; after the war, records, pictures, and even furniture had disappeared. The account of the war was taken from the official war diary of the regiment and from the Souvenir number of the Middlesex Yeomanry Magazine, which was published after the war.
