Brief history of the short-lived, so-called 'Freebooters' Republic' in the top eastern corner of British Bechuanaland around the town of Vryburg, which came into being due to conflict between warring Tswana chiefs. The Transvaal and British both vied for making their influence felt, and in the end the former asserted themselves and a band of mercenary Boers were left in control of some 15000 sq km of territory. The republic existed on its own for only a year, after which it was assimilated in a similar breakaway republic - Goshen - and persisted as a combined Republic of Stellaland and Goshen until 1885.
