How it works

First edition. ix, 263 + 2 pages publishers adverts, 4 full page sepia photographic plates, numerous black and white illustrations, black and white photographs, tables, distinctive Rowland Ward patterned paper covered boards with gilt title and vignette of a buffalo on the upper cover, titled gilt on the spine, starting to wear at the hinges, errata slip tipped in opposite page 3, a very good copy.

Loosely inserted is a sepia toned A3 folded poster entitled: Shot in Somaliland by Lord Delamere 1892 published by Rowland Ward.

The most enduring and famous of all Rowland Ward's publications is his Records of Big Game. The first edition published in 1892 was entitled Horn Measurements and Weights of the Great Game of the World. It was revised and reprinted in 1894, but the second edition, which was published only four years after the first, had two-and-a-half times the number of pages as the first. The second edition was entitled Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, and it is this title that has been used ever since.

In the later part of the nineteenth century, Rowland Ward located his shop at 167 Piccadilly, London. From far and wide, in newspapers and in casual speech throughout the Empire, his shop was famously referred to as the "The Jungle".
