An extremely scarce inscribed copy of this landmark book in South African photojournalism. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 to publish this remarkable photo-essay which documents apartheid. The book was banned in South Africa but created a sensation abroad. An exhibition of his work and the photos in this book has recently been mounted by the Hasselblad Foundation and was shown at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and abroad and was accompanied by a magnificent book commemorating Cole and his work as the original House of Bondage is now a collector's item. It is one of only three South African books included in the massive work on The Photo Book by Parr and Badger (the other two being by David Goldblatt). Cole died at the age of 50 having never published another book. Inscribed copies of House of Bondage are seldom seen. This copy is inscribed by him on the title page: "To Bonnie Finn With Gratitude Ernest Cole". This is a very good plus copy in a dw. which has slight edge wear with some minor loss and a 1+cm. tear at the junction of the top of the spine and the rear panel. Arguably one the most important photo essays by a South African.
