A famous west-east crossing of the continent; the author was chosen by the Portuguese government to explore the unknown tributaries of the Zambesi and inland Central Africa. In the latter part of the journey, he was aided by the missionary Coillard, who nursed him back to health after severe malaria. 377 + 388 pp with numerous text engravings and engraved plates, and 13 sketch maps & maps, some folding. Halfbound in handsome contemporary calf and marbled boards,re-backed; a little shelfwear; text foxed quite heavily in prelims and sporadically here and there, otherwise very good condition.
