A famous west-east crossing of the continent; the author was chosen by the Portuguese government to explore the unknown tributaries of the Zambesi and inland Central Africa. In the latter part of the journey, he was aided by the missionary Coillard, who nursed him back to health after severe malaria.

377 + 388 pp plus 32 pp ads, with 15 maps, many fold-out, one in pocket at rear of vol 1, numerous engraved plates and text illustrations and facsimiles, all present, but title page adrift. In original pictorial covers, showing some wear at edges and top and bottoms of spine, hinges vol 1 cracked but holding and a few spots of foxing in prelims, bookplate in prelims. o/w a very nice, clean set.
