Loose-leaf reproductions of five sketches, laid down on cartridge paper. Sketch: 13 x 21,5 cm. Paper: 33,5 x 31,5 cm. Quarto. Enclosed in stiff tissue guards and stored in a marbled paper covered board case with cloth spine. No. 6 of an edition limited to 156 copies.
These water-colour sketches are of rhinoceros hunting by various groups of hunters. The inscriptions on the drawings are presumed to be by Dr Andrew Smith, leader of the Expedition for which Bell had been hired as "draughtsman and fit for anything" [according to Smith's description of Bell's functions]. Bell was later Surveyor-General at the Cape in the mid-nineteenth century; he also designed the Cape triangular stamp.
