\"Born in N\'Kana, now Zambia, in 1941, Hylton Nel now has an international reputation. Schooled in Kimberley, he started to work with clay there and attended art schools in Grahamstown and later in Antwerp, Belgium, where he got a degree in Ceramics. While living in the UK, he was a member of the Crafts Centre of Great Britain.
After returning to South Africa, he taught ceramics at art schools in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Stellenbosch, all the while working with his clay art. In 1991 he moved to the small town of Bethulie in the heart of South Africa.
Taking both east and west as his cultural heritage, Nel makes mostly plates, bowls and small sculptures. He uses these as three-dimensional surfaces to put down pictorial and iconic references which embrace a universal history and literature. His vision is that of a white African with an exploring sense of humour.
His work is in many collections worldwide\".
