This copy constitutes the fifth and final division of Dr. Andrew Smith's great work on South African zoology. The full title reads:

ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE ANNULOSA OF SOUTH AFRICA; being a Portion of the Objects of Natural History chiefly collected during an Expedition into the Interior of South Africa, under the Direction of Dr. Andrew Smith, in the years 1834, 1835, and 1836; fitted out by "The Cape of Good Hope Association for Exploring Central Africa". London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1838.

The whole work, including all five divisions, fell under the following title:

ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE ZOOLOGY OF SOUTH AFRICA; Consisting Chiefly of Figures and Descriptions of the Objects of Natural History Collected During an Expedition Into the Interior of South Africa, in the Years 1834, 1835 and 1836; Fitted Out by "The Cape of Good Hope Association for Exploring Central Africa". London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1849.

This copy is in the ORIGINAL publisher's binding, which was done in three-quarter green calf with green cloth sides and gilt titles on spine, as stated in SABIB. The five divisions were initially bound separately, like this copy, but later bound together in three volumes.

This fifth division, constituting INVERTEBRATAE, was not written by Smith. Strangely, there are two title pages with different dates of imprint. SABIB clarifies:

"INVERTEBRATAE (written by W. S. Macleay) was issued originally with separate title page and the letter press given page numbers ([vi], 75p.). The title page reads: Illustrations of the Annulosa of South Africa; being a portion of the objects of natural history chiefly collected during an expedition into the interior of South Africa, under the direction of Dr. Andrew Smith, in the years 1834, 1835, and 1836; fitted out by "The Cape of Good Hope Association for Exploring Central Africa". By W.S. Macleay. . . London, Smith Elder, 1838.

Some volumes have this title page in addition to the 1849 one.
